FLAG HISTORY: New Zealand Maori flag also known as Tino Rangatiratanga flag is often considered to be a symbol of Maori sovereignty and self-determination. Features a red and black background with a white koru in the centre. Koru is a Maori symbol that represents new beginnings, growth and life. Represents Maori aspirations for self-determination and control over their own affairs.

It was first flown publicly in 1990 during protests against the government’s decision to allow a rugby team from apartheid-era South Africa to tour the country. Since then, the flag has gained widespread recognition and is often flown alongside the New Zealand national flag at official events. While it is not an official flag, the Tino Rangatiratanga flag holds great cultural significance and is an important symbol of Maori identity and self-determination.
