FLAG HISTORY: The flag of South Korea. Known as Taegukgi, features a white rectangular background with a blue and red taegeuk symbol in the centre. Four black trigrams, one in each corner. The taegeuk symbol represents the traditional Korean belief in the dual forces of yin and yang. Trigrams symbolise the four elements of the universe: water, fire, earth, and air. White background symbolises purity and peace. Blue and red colorus represent the opposing forces of heaven and earth.

The South Korean flag was first adopted in 1948, following the establishment of the Republic of Korea.
