Papua New Guinea Flag History
In 1971, a 15-year-old art student at Yule Island Mission School, on a small island off the coast of New Guinea sketched out a flag design after encouragement by her teachers. This would later become the official flag of Papua New Guinea.
The student, Susan Karike’s design consisted of a background of black and red, which were popular colours in the region’s traditional folk art. In keeping with tradition, stars representing the Southern Cross are found in the black portion of the flag. The red half displays a Raggiana bird of paradise, a large brightly plumed bird that is native to New Guinea. The bird’s feathers were used in ceremonial clothing for festivals.
