Western Australia Flag History
The current state flag of Western Australia was officially adopted by the government of Western Australia in 1953. The flag of the State of Western Australia is the Blue Ensign with the State badge, also featuring a native black swan on a circle of yellow.
The first flag of Western Australia was adopted in 1870 and is almost identical to the current flag of Western Australia. The only difference is that the swan was facing the opposite direction towards the fly rather than towards the hoist. The direction of the swan was changed to conform to the vexillological guideline that animals on flags must face the hoist, so when carried on a pole, the animal faces the same direction as the bearer. COAT OF ARMS WESTERN AUSTRALIA
The coat of arms of Western Australia has a central shield with a black swan floating on a base of rippled blue with a thin way, silver stripe representing water. Above the shield is a Royal Crown on a gold and black wreath between two kangaroo paw flowers. Two red kangaroos support the shield and each has a boomerang between its forepaws.
With the consent of the Garter Principal King of Arms, the Arms will be produced, for the use in Western Australia, in abbreviated form without the helmet and mantling. A helmet and mantling are depicted in the correct heraldic form in the Warrant to conform to heraldic principles, but omission thereof for general usage is in line with the usage of the Commonwealth of Australia and of other Australian States.
ANIMAL EMBLEM OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA
The numbat, or banded anteater, was proclaimed on 25 July 1973 as the animal emblem of Western Australia. It is reddish-brown in colour with black and white stripes across its black tail. Numbats live in wandoo forests where they dig for their main food, termites.
FLORAL EMBLEM OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA
Mangles’ kangaroo paw was proclaimed the floral emblem of Western Australia in 1960. In appearance, Red and Green Kangaroo Paw is a low sub-shrub growing from an underground stem. Its broad leaves are about 30 to 60 cm long and taper to an acute apex.
BIRD EMBLEM OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA
Although the Black Swan is found in wetlands throughout Australia, this graceful bird has had a special association with WA from the earliest times. Aboriginal lore tells how ancestors of the Noongar people, the indigenous Australians living in the southwest of the State, were once Black Swans who became men. (wa.org) These large, graceful birds have black plumage, pure white flight feathers and red beaks. The black swan can grow up to 120 cm.
